TWIG – JAWS 11th of NOV

The 11th of November was opening day at Jaws this season and it hasn’t disappointed. I’ve seen Twig catch some big waves before, but this was a monster!  Just off the plane from surfing in Europe, Twig grabbed his fresh batch of Webster Guns and this was his first surf on the new 10’0 x 21 3/4 x 4, stoked it worked. View the video footage here. Check out the TWIG board model here.

Twiggy has got off to a solid start in the 2014/15 BWWT with a 5th place finish at the Billabong Pico Alto Event in Peru. Twig broke his ankle in the Semi’s but surfed on to catch the wave of the Final before getting annihilated in the white wash. With the Southern Hemisphere leg of the BWWT coming to an end, hopefully the El Nino season is a cracker for the Northern Hemisphere and all 3 events get to run to finish off the tour. Twig / BWWT World Champ

Webster Surfboards would like to congratulate Grant ‘TWIGGY’ Baker on becoming the 2014 BWWT World Champion. It’s been a pleasure to manufacture & design Twig’s equipment for the last 2 years and see him have some amazing results on the boards.

Well done Twig on your win.

Congratulations Twig on your Big Wave World Tour event win in Spain. After a massive year of preparing and organising for the BWWT, it’s great to get a green light for the comp and see Twig finally get a chance to show what he does. Catching a couple of bombs in the final on his Webster Surfboards 10’0, Twig took out the Punta Galea title with a near perfect score of 29.01 out of 30.

2013 has been great year for me, working closely with Twig in designing and refining his equipment and has lead to some great gun models coming out of our shaping bay, read more about the TWIG model here.

Winter is here for the Southern Hemisphere and Twig is wasting none of it. Here he is pictured at Dungeons, South Africa hunting Rhinos.

High Volume Guns

High Volume Guns

The boards I’m currently working on with Twig are definitely alot more high volume than your average gun. Just like the shortened length and wider noses in shortboard design, Twig has been working on the same principle with his gun designs for the last few years.

The boards are thicker and wider throughout, allowing him to ride shorter boards than previous years for the wave size he is paddling into. Twig jokes about being slagged for riding funboards in larger waves, but with what’s currently going down at Jaws, it seems his theory’s are now being pounced upon by all big wave chasers.

Where Jaws once seemed to be a tow-in wave, it is quickly becoming the perfect wave to get barrelled of your nut on your 10’6. The same principles apply to all large swells world wide, enjoy your Winter.
